Jennifer McGowan

Jennifer is a Phd candidate in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions (CEED) at The University of Queensland.  Her work broadly focuses on systematic conservation planning for marine and coastal ecosystems with projects based in the Coral Triangle, California’s National Marine Sanctuaries, and South America.

Brigitte Sommer

Brigitte_photo-for-websiteBrigitte is a Phd candidate in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Science at The University of Queensland.  Her work broadly focuses ecological dynamics and conservation of subtropical coral and benthic communities of eastern Australia in a changing climate.

Maha Khalil

Reef Ecology Lab Red Sea Research CenterKing Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

Maha is a PhD candidate at KAUST investigating larval dispersal and how to incorporate it in the design of marine protected areas.

Supervised by Dr Mike Berumen,  Xabier Irigoien, Marc Genton, and Maria Beger.

 

Erica Nielsen

Erica is a MSc candidate at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) that I co-supervise with Dr Sophie von der Heyden.  Her project explores conservation priorities around the South African coast that incorporate intertidal genetic diversity.

 

 

Completed students: 

Dr Azusa Makino

Azusa’s PhD with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions at The University of Queensland developed and tested new tools for marine conservation planning with projects based in Fiji and Japan.

Pei Ya Boon, MSc, University of East Anglia

peiyaPei Ya has a background in environmental management and marine habitat monitoring, with her pet habitat being mangrove forests. Her interest in marine spatial planning started while working on her masters thesis on planning with threats in the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion. She is currently helping Flora Fauna International with the zoning plans of Cambodia’s first Marine Fisheries Management Area.

Laurel Osbourne, Honours

LaurelLaurel completed her honours degree with CEED in 2014. Her research interests are in coral reef resilience and conservation planning.
